The scientific name for low sperm count is oligospermia (ol-ih-go-sperm-ee-uh) and this occurs when you produce less than 15 million sperm in one milliliter of sperm. As the average amount of sperm is one teaspoon and contains nearly 200 million sperm, the numbers are vastly different.
Your sperm count determines your fertility and often indicates how much testosterone you have. As testosterone is fuel for sperm production, when you have a low sperm count, you are much more likely to have low testosterone. But, what are the numbers for low sperm count? Have you surpassed this threshold?
When it’s low, you may have an increased difficulty getting your partner pregnant or enjoying your sperm in the various other ways that are out there. For some men, the only symptom of low sperm count is difficulties with fertility, for other men, they may experience erectile dysfunction, lowered sexual drive, swelling, pain, a lump in your testicles, and/or reduced hair on the body or face.
With that all said, let’s discuss some of the foods that contribute to increased sperm production. If you do not enjoy many foods, do not worry, there are many foods that can assist you.
Here are six of them.
#1 OYSTERS
Oysters are an excellent food to add zinc to your diet, which can boost your sperm production. In addition, they are aphrodisiacs, so are able to boost your sexual drive. The recommended amount of oysters per day is 15 mg which will mean about 50g of oysters. While these are the recommended amounts, oysters may stretch your budget to an uncomfortable level, so here are other foods that have a great deal of zinc: pumpkin seeds, mussels, turkey, and lobster.
#2 GARLIC
Adding just one to two cloves every day can boost our sperm count. While garlic may have a very strong smell and taste, it is an excellent food to increase the motility of your sperm so they are able to move better when being ejaculated into your partner. Garlic has two components that positively affect your sperm—allicin, and selenium. Allicin doubles as a blood-flow booster and protector of your sperm, while selenium adds antioxidants to our body in order to help sperm motility.
#3 DARK CHOCOLATE
Adding just a couple of squares of dark chocolate each day is excellent for your sperm count and its volume. Antioxidants combat free radical which are present in pollution and other toxins. These damaging molecules are tied to infertility, so every effort should be taken to reduce or avoid them. Dark chocolate has a high amount of antioxidants and is on the same level as pomegranates and acai berries. While dark chocolate can be excellent if you enjoy it and bitter if you do not, you should take care to eat it in moderation. Mentioned before, a few squares are excellent per day. If you gain too much weight, this can negatively affect your testosterone levels which will lower your sperm count.
#4 BROCCOLI
To fill yourself with Vitamin A, add some broccoli to your diet. A lack or decreased amount of vitamin A can lead to slow swimmers which can decrease fertility. If broccoli is not quite your liking, then you can also boost your vitamin A through foods such as spinach, sweet potatoes, red peppers, apricots, and carrots.
#5 WALNUTS
To boost your sperm count and the blood flow to your penis, add walnuts. These healthy, tasty nuts are excellent for your… testicles. Whether you like them on your desserts, cereal, or just plain, they are a great source of omega-3 fatty acids. When you are craving some other food filled with omega-3 fatty acids, pick up chicken, crab, salmon, and/or pumpkin seeds.
#6 GINSENG
When you add ginseng to your diet, through tea or through dried roots, you are boosting your testosterone levels. With more testosterone, your body will create more sperm. An aphrodisiac, ginseng has prevented to help many men’s sexual functioning for many hundreds of years, including increase sexual drive, blood flow to the penis, and sperm production.
When you are having difficulty concerning your fertility, you should consult with your doctor if you have been unable to produce offspring after a year of sexual intercourse that is not deterred by contraceptive methods.
